Running the Classic Boardwalks

Running or walking along an oceanside boardwalk is a classic summer pastime. These promenades are generally dedicated paths along the water, often with restaurants, bars, shops, and amusements. The true classics are those dating back to the early 20th century, mainly in New York and New Jersey. In Europe, some of what we call boardwalks are ‘promenades’. This list is a few of our favorites — and generally different than an oceanside road/sidewalk/bikepath. This list is not in order of ‘best’, but more sorted by geography.

Jersey Shore Boardwalks

Jersey Shore, NJ

The Jersey Shore is famous for its boardwalks, and the longer ones are great for running. Great ocean views, people watching, and entertainment. Our favorites: Atlantic City, Wildwood, Avalon to Belmar, and Seaside. Might have to dodge the crowds in summer.

Miami Beach

Miami, FL

One of the great urban beaches. The wide sand beach stretches for nearly ten miles from south to north with a running path along most of the way. South Beach is where the action is .

Summerside Boardwalk

Prince Edward Island

The waterfront boardwalk makes for a great run in PEI's second largest city. It runs about 4 km from Mackenzie Dr. until a point where Water St. turns inland. About 4 km one-way. Great water and harbour views.

Nice: Promenade des Anglais

Nice, France

A famous 7 km promenade along the Mediterranean. Great water views, boats, marina, and other classic sites of southern France. On a nice day, the Promenade is full of all sorts of activity. Separate paths for pedestrians & cyclists much of way.

Dubai Marina

Dubai, UAE

The 8 km promenade alongside Dubai’s Marina is one of the most scenic runs in Dubai, with towering skyscrapers lining the paved path on one side, and turquoise waters and yachts on the other.
