Spectacular Residential Neighborhoods For Running: United States

Running through a pretty residential neighborhood with wide, tree-lined streets and gorgeous homes is one of running’s great pleasures. This is a guide to 30 favorite neighborhoods, with a focus on those that are centrally located. For the most part, these are classic, older residential areas, many of which are designated historic districts. The order is alphabetical, by city.

Buckhead Area

Atlanta, GA

South End Highlights

Boston, MA

A tour of Boston's lovely South End, which is easily accessible from Back Bay or downtown hotels. Brownstone lined streets, pleasant, historic squares and parks, and main streets lined with restaurants and boutiques.

Booty Loop

Charlotte, NC

The most well-known running loop in Charlotte, featuring the idyllic Myers Park neighborhood with its tall oaks, and lovely homes, and hilly roads. Nice Add-On: Freedom Park trails

Chicago: Suburbs

Even though many multi use paths abut residential areas, some Chicago suburb neighborhoods are worth a run of their own. Visitors can explore the gorgeous homes, pristine sidewalks, and distinct character of Chicago’s top places to live.

Palmetto Bluff

Hilton Head Island & Area, SC

A combination residential community and resort area 20 miles of Hilton Head. Some 20 miles of gorgeous trails open to the public. Highly recommended is the River Rd. Trail, with woods, live oaks, views to the May River, and freshwater lagoons.

Hollywoodland-BeachWood Drive

Los Angeles, CA

A hilly run on and off Off North Beechwood Dr. where you’ll see some spectacular homes. Use that road as an anchor and meander to the other residential streets in the area. Can add 2.5 miles to the Griffith Park Observatory.

Edgartown Tour

Martha's Vineyard, MA

Tony Edgartown is the historic and commercial center of Martha's Vineyard. Develop your own route incorporating Lighthouse Beach, whaling captains' homes along Water St. and the leafy side streets with quaint homes, shops, & inns.

Coral Gables Neighborhood

Miami, FL

An older, upscale residential neighborhood just west of Miami. Lovely parks and gorgeous, tree-lined streets with historic homes well set back from the road. Take our 8-mile tour and/or create your own route in the residential area.

Heritage Hills/Mesta Park

Oklahoma City, OK

Some of the most historic and scenic streets in Oklahoma City can be found in the Heritage Hills and Mesta Park neighborhoods, which boast large trees, beautiful mansions, and a grid-like street system perfect for a DIY run.

Cape Elizabeth

Portland, ME

Cape Elizabeth is Portland’s most affluent suburb, with lovely waterfront sections and pretty residential streets. This is the route of the 10k Beach to Beacon road race. Options to vary from this.

Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion

Portland, OR

This 700 foot climb starts at the Lower Macleay Trail and the Kings Heights neighborhood, and follows that into the Wildwood Trail and up to the Mansion, which has been used in a number of motion pictures, and in The Amazing Race.

Palo Alto Residential

Silicon Valley, CA

Palo Alto is the ‘center’ of Silicon Valley. A great run is to do a random tour of Palo Alto’s toniest residential streets, which feature gorgeous older homes, beautiful lawns, and lovely shade trees. Use University Ave. as the 'anchor'.

Embassy Row

Washington, DC

This run along the wide sidewalks of Massachusetts Ave. takes you by 150+ embassies, the Naval Observatory home of the Vice President), and ending at the National Cathedral.
